Federal funds rate

The federal funds rate is the interest rate that banks with excess reserves can charge other banks that need overnight loans. The Federal funds rate is a good indicator to the direction of US interest rates. The federal funds rate is also considered a good indicator to the direction of interest rates since this rate is set daily by the market. This is unlike the prime rate and the discount rate which is set by the government.
