OEX index

The OEX index is a capitalization-weighted index which spans multiple industry sectors. The OEX index is also known as the S&P 100 Index (which has the symbol OEX).

The OEX index was originally created by the CBOE and was originally composed of the top 100 stocks that traded on the CBOE. Around 1983 Standard & Poor's began managing the OEX index and was subsequently named the S&P 100 Index.

As with most indices the OEX requires a divisor to calculate to compensate for component deletions, splits, options, mergers, spin-offs, etc. which affect the overall market capitalization values.

To calculate the OEX index take the market value of all of the stocks in the index and divide by the "divisor". (to calculate the divisor take the market value and divide by the current index value.)
