Trading effect

Trading effect refers to a form of performance measurement used to examine the returns of a managed bond portfolio against an specified index or benchmark.

Simply put, if the index or benchmark outperformed the managed portfolio than the portfolio manager lost value of that portfolio. If the index or benchmark was outperformed by the managed portfolio than the portfolio manager increased value of that portfolio.
