ChartFilter
Stock Screening Tips Issue #2
by
Alex Martin
In
this months newsletter we will
be exploring price range, average
volume, company description, assets
and liabilities for the fundamental
choices. We will also restrict
the search to a smaller set of
exchanges. For the technical indicator
we will include the RSI technical
indicator (as featured in the
ChartFilter
Newsletter #6).
Step
1: Limiting the Exchanges.
For
this example we will concentrate
the search on TSE, TSX, NYSE,
AMEX and NASDAQ.
Step
2: Technical Indicator RSI
Choose
a signal age of 1 to 10 days.
The
RSI is a momentum indicator, or
oscillator, that measures the
relative internal strength of
a market (not against another
market or index). As with all
oscillators, RSI can provide early
warning signals but should be
used in conjunction with other
indicators. Divergences are the
most important signal provided
by RSI. It is important to
chart each one of your results
to accurately analyse the RSI.
For more information see report
on RSI
Step
3: Fundamental, close
In
our last newsletter we explored
a basic stock screen of price
greater than $5. What if we want
to look for a range of prices,
lets say $5 to $20? To do this
we require to use two fundamental
boxes.
Close
greater than or equal to
$5 and Close less
than or equal to $20.
Step
4: Fundamental, average
30 day volume
In
this screen we will keep the criteria
of 30 day average volume
greater than or equal to
50 000.
Step
5: Fundamental,
business description
We
have several options in our business
description, this is similar to
looking for sectors. We can choose
oil, medical, energy, tech, manufacture,
and so forth. The description
of the company describes what
business the company is involved
in.
For
this filter, we will use a business
description equal to
oil
Step
6: Fundamental, assets
and liabilities
For
these fundamentals we will NOT
be including an operator nor a
value.
This
will give us the assets and liability
values that are stored in the
ChartFilter database. It will
not be included as a condition.
Step
7: click search and view results
These
are the results of the search.

The
database has returned 20 matches
for our query. The first on our
list (in my opinion) can be removed
since assets are less than liabilities,
however the second listing may
be of value to begin analyzing.
When
analyzing these results, it is
important to include complimentary
indicators with the RSI and pay
close attention to divergances
and convergances within the chart.

the RSI, consult the ChartFilter
Newsletter #6.
